Lawsuits against Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals continue to flood in to both federal and state courts, claiming that its birth control pills, Yaz and Yasmin, are causing serious injuries and in more severe cases, death.
The Bayer-produced birth control pills are fourth generation oral contraceptives that contain a progestin component, drospirenone, that is supposed to work in conjunction with estrogen to prevent pregnancy. Drospirenone, a diuretic, has been known to cause a dangerous increase in potassium levels, however, which can, in turn, result in serious blood clotting.
“No other birth control uses a diuretic as an active ingredient, said Daniel Gallucci, a RodaNast, P.C. attorney who filed one of the first lawsuits concerning Yaz or Yasmin.
Gallucci, who is in the process of investigating hundreds of Yaz/Yasmin lawsuits said that there has been a significantly higher number of adverse events linked to Yaz and Yasmin than any other birth control pill.
In fact, according to one suit filed by plaintiff Anne Marie Eakins of Ohio, there were more than 50 incidents of death among users of Yaz or Yasmin reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) between 2004 and 2008.
While not all the lawsuits are wrongful death cases, they all involve serious injuries, such as: gallbladder damage, kidney stones, heart attacks, strokes, pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. Injured plaintiffs seek compensation for their physical, emotional and financial losses.
