Yaz/Yasmin Birth Control

Yasmin® is an oral contraceptive produced by Bayer, Berlex and Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceutical and was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001.

Yaz®, a variation of Yasmin®, is an oral contraceptive produced by Bayer, Berlex and Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceutical and was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006.

Yaz® and Yasmin® are fourth generation oral contraceptives that combine estrogen and progestin to prevent pregnancy.

Since Yaz® and Yasmin® hit the U.S. market, they have been linked to serious side effects and death. If you have been affected our Yaz® birth control lawyers can help.

What Makes Yaz® and Yasmin® Different From Other Birth Control Pills?

While most oral birth control pills contain the synthetic hormone progestin, Yaz® and Yasmin® are the only birth control pills on the market that contain the progestin component, drospirenone. According to reports, however, drospirenone causes problems with potassium levels in the human body. Furthermore, the combination of drospirenone and estrogen may result in gallbladder disease and a higher rate of dangerous blood clotting compared to other birth control pills.

Yaz® Lawsuits & Serious Side Effects

In addition to gallbladder disease and blood clotting, Yaz® and Yasmin® have been linked to other serious, potentially fatal side effects including:

  • Gallbladder damage
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Kidney stones
  • Heart attacks
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Death

According to the FDA, more than 50 deaths linked to Yaz® and Yasmin® have been reported since 2004.

Because of the vast number of injuries that have been linked to these birth control pills and the inaccurate warnings accompanying the pills, Bayer has been sued hundreds of times. The number of lawsuits continues to increase, and the lawsuits have been consolidated in several states, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Illinois and California. With approximately one thousand Yasmin® and Yaz® lawsuits already filed, it appears that thousands of lawsuits will be filed in the future.

What is the Basis of the Yaz® and Yasmin® Lawsuits?

The lawsuits against Bayer have been based on a number of injuries including deep vein thrombosis, heart attack, stroke, gallbladder damage and pulmonary embolism. The plaintiffs are also alleging that Bayer withheld safety information from consumers.

FDA Requires Bayer to Tell the Truth about Yaz®

Bayer was in the hot seat in 2008 when the FDA required them to retract their attractive advertising campaign that claimed that Yaz® did more than prevent pregnancy. The campaign claimed that the birth control pill was an effective treatment for acne and premenstrual syndrome (PMS), despite the fact that it was not approved to do so.

According to the FDA, the colorful advertisements overstated the birth control's abilities while playing down the potential health risks. In an effort to correct the false advertising, Bayer was required to pay $20 million on a new, corrective campaign that will be released over the course of the next six years.
