Investigations are being conducted to determine the cause of unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles. Investigations have given rise to a debate regarding the cause. Some people report to believe the problem lies in the electrical throttle control systems, arguing malfunctions in the systems may be causing affected vehicles to accelerate on their own, without the drivers’ control.
Toyota denies these claims, arguing against equipment defects. The company has reported to believe sticky pedals and loose floor mats are linked to the problems. The company recalled millions of its popular vehicles, and has developed a device they claim will help with sticky pedals.
A research study was conducted to determine the safety level of Toyota’s Electric Throttle Control systems. According to the preliminary report, authored by David W. Gilbert, Ph.D., and Omar Trinidad, Feb. 21, 2010, researchers examined the electrical throttle systems in multiple Toyota vehicles in an effort to determine if the systems are operating exactly as intended. The study examined the fail-safe strategies of Toyota, and researchers involved in the study noted that the findings warrant additional investigation.
Study authors wrote in their recommendation that a thorough technical investigation should be conducted in vehicles that are suspect of having problems with sudden acceleration issues. Researchers wrote in the study that they do not believe the issues are being caused by problems with sticky pedal or floor mats, as Toyota claims.
The following Toyota makes and modes were included in the study:
• 2005 Toyota Avalon (4T1BK36B55U001024)
• 2006 Lexus IS350 (JTHBE262762001849)
• 2007 Toyota Tundra (5TBBV54177S449783)
• 2009 Toyota Matrix (2T1GE40E19C001003)
