Reglan

RODANAST, P.C. represents individuals who have been harmed by Reglan. Designed to treat gastrointestinal disorders, Reglan (metoclopramide) has been linked to serious health conditions. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an alert in March 2009, warning consumers and health providers of the link between Reglan use and the development of the movement disorder, tardive dyskinesia.

Reglan Tardive Dyskinesia

Tardive dyskinesia is a movement disorder that affects the nervous system. This disorder is usually irreversible and is marked by uncontrolled, repetitive muscle spasms or movements of the arms, legs, tongue, jaw or cheeks.

The active ingredient found in Reglan products, metoclopramide, has been directly linked to the development of the disorder. Metoclopramide-containing products include:

  • Reglan tablets
  • Reglan oral disintegrating tablets
  • Metoclopramide oral solution
  • Reglan injection

Patients who are at the highest risk of developing tardive dyskinesia are patients who take Reglan for long periods of time at high doses.

Other Reglan Side Effects

In addition to tardive dyskinesia, Reglan has been linked to several other side effects, most of which are mild. Milder Reglan side effects can include:

  • Decreased energy/ weakness
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Chronic headache
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Severe allergic reaction

Most medications affect some people in some way—minor side effects are not uncommon. It is the serious side effects of Reglan that should be of concern to patients who are prescribed the medication. If you or someone you love is taking Reglan, it is important to seek medical attention immediately if you begin to develop any combination of the following symptoms:

  • Muscle spasms
  • Lip smacking
  • Uncontrolled chewing or sucking movements
  • Tongue protrusion
  • Rapid eye movements/blinking
  • Grimacing (making faces uncontrollably)

Other symptoms to watch out for include:

  • Fever
  • Dizziness
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Abnormal thoughts/confusion
  • Discolored, dark urine
  • Unexplained changes in mood
  • Chronic headache
  • Stiff, tight muscles
  • Excessive sweating
  • Swelling of the arms, legs or feet
