Joseph F. Roda is a shareholder and president of RODANAST, P.C. He handles all types of cases that the firm takes, including individual and class actions.

Education
Mr. Roda was born and raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Harvard University (magna cum laude) in 1971 and the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1974, where he and his partner won the school’s Keedy Cup moot court competition in 1974.

Career Milestones

• After law school, Mr. Roda served a clerkship on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and then worked for five years with Kohn, Savett, Marion & Graf, P.C., a nationally prominent litigation firm in Philadelphia.
• In 1980, Mr. Roda established his own firm, Joseph F. Roda, P.C., which became RODANAST, P.C. in April, 1995.
• Mr. Roda is listed in The Best Lawyers in America.
• Mr. Roda is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, which limits its membership to 1% of attorneys practicing in a state and selects its members only upon nomination and review at the local, state and national levels.
• He is also a fellow in the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, which limits its United States membership to 500 attorneys.
• Mr. Roda has been named a Super Lawyer by Philadelphia Magazine, based on a survey of 39,000 Pennsylvania attorneys, every year that the magazine has conducted this survey. Only the top 5% of attorneys in the state are so named.
• In the 2006 and 2007 Pennsylvania Super Lawyers surveys, Mr. Roda has also been named one of Pennsylvania’s top 100 attorneys.
• Mr. Roda has obtained record verdicts in a number of jurisdictions.
• Among Mr. Roda’s recent case results:
  • A $24 million verdict against two national railroad companies for electrocution injuries to two teenage boys.
  • A $15 million arbitration award for breach of contract by a national retailer.
  • A $14 million settlement of a national class action for the partial refund of premiums for worker’s compensation policies.
  • An $11 million settlement with an automobile manufacturer for death and personal injuries to two girls because of the faulty design of an SUV.
  • A $3 million settlement for the negligent death of a newborn in a neonatal unit.
• A major portion of Mr. Roda’s practice involves insurance bad faith, an area that has emerged in Pennsylvania since 1990 with the enactment that year of a state law that gives the insured the right to punitive damages, attorney fees, costs and interest if an insurance company acts in bad faith. Mr. Roda’s bad faith cases include one of the largest bad faith verdicts in Pennsylvania to date under this law.

Professional Affiliations

• Mr. Roda has been a member of the House of Delegates of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, and a Hearing Committee member for the Disciplinary Board of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
