Taking Actos (pioglitazone) has been shown to increase the risk of serious side effects, perhaps the most alarming of which is bladder cancer. In June of 2011, the FDA and several European health agencies announced that taking Actos for more than one year increases your risk of bladder cancer. These risks became apparent only halfway through the FDA-required 10-year evaluation of patients taking Actos. As a result, stronger warnings have been added to the labeling for Actos, and doctors have been advised against prescribing Actos to individuals who may be at risk for bladder cancer.
Symptoms of bladder cancer can include:
- Blood or blood clots in the urine (hematuria)
- Pain during urination (dysuria)
- Urinating small amounts frequently
- Frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Pain in the lower back, kidneys, or pelvic area
- A growth in the pelvic area near the bladder
Our experienced legal team can help you if you were diagnosed with bladder cancer while taking Actos. We will evaluate your case free of charge, and will not collect any fees unless you are compensated for your injuries.
Actos can also lead to other serious side effects. These include:
- Heart attack and heart failure
- Liver damage
- Kidney damage
- Bone fractures
It was once believed that Actos was a safer alternative to Avandia, another dangerous drug in the same category. This is not the case; in fact, Actos shares many of the same health risks and poses additional bladder cancer risks as well. If you were prescribed Actos as an alternative to Avandia and developed one of these side effects, including bladder cancer, you may be eligible for a cash award for your injuries.
